Romans 9:1 (NIV-WS)
1 I speak the truth in Christ-I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit-
Our conscience or the inner voice- the voice of our spirit has the important role alongside the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us by confirming or not, the things we have in our hearts. It is therefore, important that we seek and heed that confirmation or witness of the Holy Spirit and our conscience. It is an indication of God’s approval.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22 says
Now it is God who makes both us and you stand firm in Christ. He anointed us, set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
The Holy Spirit is in our hearts, as God’s seal of ownership and a guarantee of the fulfilment of His promises, so His witness concerning anything is our guarantee, that thing is going to come to pass. It’s God’s seal of approval or otherwise.
A Clear Conscience
A clear conscience enables us to perceive that witness or confirmation clearly. Apostle Paul understood this and said in Acts 24:16 (KJV Strong’s)
16 And herein do I exercise myself, to have always a conscience void of offence toward God, and toward men.
Acts 24:16 (NIV-WS)
16 So I strive always to keep my conscience clear before God and man.
A clear conscience is a conscience void of offence. Offence is something that causes stumbling i.e something that is in the way. So a clear conscience means there’s nothing there to stumble over, nothing in the way between us and God and other people. We don’t go about with something bothering us all day. It’s all clear in our conscience (on TV, you know how police officers come into a house, check each room and shout clear, that’s how it should be in our hearts – clear!) In this clear state, we are not unsure or confused when the next instruction or direction comes.
How do I keep a clear conscience?
Hebrews 13:18 (AMPC)
? 18 Keep praying for us, for we are convinced that we have a good (clear) conscience, that we want to walk uprightly and live a noble life, acting honorably and in complete honesty in all things.
The key to a clear conscience is to act honourably and in complete honesty in all things. The yardstick for that is not anybody else’s actions but the light of God we have in our hearts and see in His word. It’s not so much about whether something is sin or not, if our conscience bothers us about it, then to us, it is sin.
1 John 3:19-22 (KJV Strong’s)
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. 20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. 22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
A clear conscience maintains confidence towards God. If your heart is bothering you about something, the smart thing to do is sort it out with Him straight away because He already knows! When your conscience bothers you, even if ever so slightly, heed your conscience immediately and keep it all clear.
Father God for all the times I did not heed my conscience please forgive me. Help me, open my heart, ears and mind. Any changes in action please show me again and by your grace and with your help I purpose not to ignore but to do and have a clear, good conscience between me and you and others.
